A unique national park
Vatnajökull national park was established on 9. June 2008 with the goal to protect Vatnajökull glacier and the area around it.
Vatnajökull glacier is almost 15% of Iceland's area and about half of the national parks area. The park has examples of volcanic eruptions, hot springs, watercourses and of course the formation of and the formative influence of glaciers.
Within Vatnajökull national park there are numerous historical areas and incredibly diverse landscapes which hold countless invaluable natural treasures. This is because Vatnajökull national park has unique natural conditions which can not be found anywhere else in the world. The constant struggle between fire and ice which still rages on is a good example of this uniqueness only found in Vatnajökull national park.
